Your Black History Month Events Guide

This October marks Black History Month, a national celebration which aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to develop a better understanding a Black history in general. The theme for this year is Proud To Be, inviting Black and Brown people of all ages throughout the UK to share what they are proud to be. Black History Month also brings many events from a range of different companies, charities and other providers. We’ve listed some of these below!

Test your knowledge on Black British History in four rounds spanning Black music, general knowledge, key moments in UK Black History, and our Black to Past special round.

Windrush Celebration of Black Heroes and Legacies during Black History Month

1st October – All Day

Location: Battersea Arts Centre

As part of Black History Month and beyond, this project will share the story of the life of John Archer the first black mayor of Battersea (elected 1913), and the first black mayor appointed in London. He was also a black rights civil campaigner and activist for labour rights and other social issues.

Join us to find out how to trace your nursing family history. TV director Tim Kirby will describe his work on the BBC documentary Our NHS: A Hidden History. From one file in the National Archives, Tim managed to trace the stories of 30 nurses from Barbados.
