7 Sep 2022, 10:00 - 16:00 – Online – Paid

An intensive masterclass that will give you the tools to write impactful copy for newsletters, blogs and websites, with Andy Pemberton.

It has never been more true that bad writing holds back business. Without communicating your brand purpose to existing and prospective customers, how can anyone really know what you stand for and why they should choose you, above all others? This does, of course, mean that good writing - impactful, informative and punchy writing - wins customers. Good writing stands out.

Andy Pemberton, the former editor of Q magazine, will show you how to create copy with real impact. In this insightful masterclass, discover how to identify your “one true customer”, and how to utilise the power of emotion to capture attention and increase engagement.

Learn about the nuts and bolts of attention-grabbing copy for newsletters, blogs and websites, as well as how to create subject lines that actually make people want to open their emails, and the formula for call to actions that secure clicks. Through a blend of lively discussions and interactive exercises, learn what works, what doesn’t and why.

Throughout the day you will have plenty of opportunities to sharpen your writing skills, from creating compelling headlines to crafting active sentences. You will also have time to reflect on your business, to think strategically on tone and style, and leave with practical information that you can share with your organisation.

Management Series - Self-awareness with The School of Life

13 Sep 2022, 14:30 - Tue, 20 Sep 2022, 16:00 – Online – Paid

Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence, yet studies show that while most of us think we understand ourselves, we often have little idea how others really see us. This alarming gap leads to misunderstandings, poor teamwork, increased conflict, poor decision-making, and a lack of direction.

More About the Workshop

This Management Series workshop touches upon all the same ideas, theories, insights and strategies as our standard Self-Awareness workshop (detailed below). The additional value comes from the depth and specificity of the exploration that follows. Facilitated by our specially trained faculty – the participants will be able to consider how the learnings can be applied to their roles, their teams, and their company’s culture, sharing their concerns and their experiences with the group.

You must attend both workshops, the dates are:

- 13th September 2022 at 2:30pm-4pm

- 20th September 2022 at 2:30pm-4pm

Evaluate how others begin to see us differently when we step into leadership roles, how that can affect the process of gathering feedback, and how to ensure honest discussion is maintained.

What characterises mastery of this skill?

Highly self-aware employees understand the influence of their unconscious thought processes. At work, they might demonstrate self-awareness through a careful process of decision-making and by admitting vulnerabilities to colleagues, clients and managers. They often ask for feedback, in order to better understand how others see them.

What characterises a lack of this skill?

A lack of self-awareness can be observed in employees who do not comprehend the gap between their self-image and the reality of how others view them. They are resistant towards honest and constructive feedback and struggle to accept that others might disagree on their version of reality. This often leads to disagreements, slower learning rates or promotions and avoidable conflicts.

Finding A Fulfilling Job with The School of Life

24 Sep 2022, 14:30 - 21:00 – Online – Paid

By the end of the session, participants should gain a clear sense of the necessary next steps to make their work and their passions aligned.

About this event

One of the most extraordinary and yet quietly routine assumptions of our age is that we should be able to find work that we can not only tolerate for the money, but profoundly appreciate - work with a high degree of purpose, camaraderie and creativity. We see nothing strange in the remarkable notion that we should try to find a job we love.

This one-day virtual workshop insists that, in order to stand any chance of honouring our desire for meaningful employment, we will need to lavish concentrated brain power, time and imagination on its underlying complexities.

Faculty

Maurits Kalff is a psychologist, coach and magistrate. After qualifying as a research psychologist he climbed a corporate ladder, only to conclude that professional autonomy is a more rewarding premise. He now works as a psychologist helping a wide range of people, from those living with chronic illness to investment bankers.

Testimonials

'10/10 - Thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot'

'10/10 - Brilliant & useful content'

Learning from Failure with Failspace

 28 Sep 2022, 10:00 - 12:00 – Online – Free

At this online workshop, you will gain practical skills to enable you to facilitate more honest and open conversations about failure, and how we can learn from these experiences.

We will start from the premise that projects are rarely an outright success or failure. Rather, success and failure are better understood to different degrees along a spectrum. Furthermore, different stakeholders, with differing value systems, will define 'success' and 'failure' in different ways. In order to ensure we are learning, it is therefore necessary to ask: success and failure for whom? In what ways? To what effect?

This workshop will take place on Zoom from 10:00am to 12:00pm, with a 5 minute break halfway through the session. We encourage all participants to engage with their cameras on, however, we understand that this is not always possible.

This workshop will be led by Failspace

FailSpace is an AHRC-funded research project exploring how the cultural sector can better recognise, acknowledge and learn from failure, particularly when undertaking work intended to diversify and grow the people who are taking part in subsidised cultural activities. The project is led by Leila Jancovich (University of Leeds), with David Stevenson (Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh), Lucy Wright, and Malaika Cunningham.
