Christmas at Adland

As December looms with magic and excitement of festive season, we’re sharing our top picks so far for Christmas Adverts 2022!

Asda: Have your Elf a Merry Christmas by Havas London

Starting off with some truly festive nostalgia, this year's Asda Christmas advert sees Will Ferrell reprise his role in Elf to become Asda's newest seasonal recruit.

Using original footage and iconic lines from the UK's favourite Christmas film, which first debuted in 2003, Asda places our beloved Buddy the Elf right at the heart of a bustling store in the build-up to his favourite time of year, Christmas.

Sam Dickson, Acting Chief Customer Officer at Asda, says: 'Like Buddy, we absolutely love Christmas – so we're thrilled to welcome him to our team. We know this has been a tough year for so many people, which is why we want to create some little moments of joy for families this year with our Christmas campaign, and more importantly, our amazing products. We hope that with a little bit of help from Buddy, our joy-filled Christmas offering will create some festive magic and helps give families a Christmas to remember together.'

Sainsbury's: Once Upon a Pud by Wieden+Kennedy London

With a tale as old as time, Sainsburys transports us all the back to medieval times to spotlight the commonly divisive, Christmas pudding. The tongue-in-cheek advert stars Alison Hammond as The Countess, and depicts a young chef’s quest to reimagine and breathe new life into the traditional festive staple.

John Lewis: The Beginner by Adam & Eve/DDB

Set to the heartwarming-182's punk pop tune 'All The Small Things', John Lewis delivers a heart warming story of festive bonding between a man and his foster child through learning how to skateboard. The closing scene ends with the note that 108,000 children within the UK currently reside within the care system. It highlights the 18-month-long project that John Lewis has undertaken in partnership with Action for Children and Who Cares? Scotland, with a John Lewis spokesperson noting that while the campaign features a story set at Christmas, the project itself extends past the festive season.

Waitrose: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas by Adam & Eve/DDB

Waitrose spotlights its array of partners and suppliers in its annual Christmas campaign. Created by Adam & Eve/DDB, the 60-second spot showcases the level of care and commitment that goes into the supermarket’s food all year long. Exploring the frosty conditions farmers work in throughout the winter months, the delicate task of beekeeping and even the laser-focus needed when selecting crops.

Aldi: Home Alone by McCann

In homage to the Macaulay Culkin Christmas classic Home Alone, Kevin spends the holidays in his house setting traps for a pesky intruder that is lurking outside. Sadly, the root vegetable gets distracted playing a game of football and separated from his family. Thankfully, the advrt ends with Kevin reunited with his family where he finds his intruder to be none other than Santa himself!

Lidl: Lidl Bear by Accenture Song

Lidl's Christmas ad starts with a typical family home where, after a dad shrinks his jumper in the wash, his young daughter has the ingenious idea of putting the tiny sweater on her toy bear – Lidl's star is born!

Lidl Bear's career takes off and we watch as he lives up all the luxuries of supermarket stardom but sooner or later, Lidl Bear realises his true purpose and parachutes back home just in time for Christmas.
