Diversity
Diversity works for organisations. A workforce which includes people of different gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, language, belief and disability enriches a company’s culture and improves its productivity. Two workforce categories which many people don’t automatically associate with definitions of diversity are those seeking flexible, part-time options, and people of mature age. Of all diversity groups in the market place, these two are the ones which are most frequently targeted by organisations. They will be a vital resource in a future of major demographic change.

The demographics
Anxious pronouncements about a ticking demographic timebomb are common currency now. It’s worth taking a measured look at the evidence to consider exactly what the implications for workplaces will be, and to consider how to develop innovative strategies to deal with a situation which if managed intelligently could have positive benefits.

Nurturing a mature workforce
“There’s an estimated need for an additional million carers to support the UK’s ageing population over the next twenty years. It makes sense to recruit care workers from amongst the older working population, because they can empathise with clients’ needs and requirements”, says Richard Smith, Director of Randstad Care.
