finding a new role

The next stop on the journey

So you’re on the career path you want to be on, but feel like it’s time to visit the next stop on your journey? Let’s set up a plan of action...

Before you do anything (just like for those changing direction), you need a large blank sheet of paper.

In the middle, draw a large circle with the word ‘Me’ in it. Then create a mind-map with branches for your particular skills and experience (account management, creative, project management etc).

Then use a branch or two for analogies to describe who you are:

  • Values (best quality work)
  • Culture (laid back, fun, focus, attention to detail)
  • Likes (music, art, books, holidays)
  • How I like to work (long hours, flexibility, with/without direction)
  • What I want (your goals and aspirations)
  • Motivations (what works for me)
  • And anything else you want that says who you are: your heroes, inspiration etc.

Consider when in the past you have felt most motivated about work and what factors were present to make this happen? Lastly, decide your minimum day rate or salary and what else is important to you (location, benefits etc).

This will form both the basis of your CV / portfolio and will help with the interview process. When you apply for a new job your new employer wants to know:

  • What you can do for them – and evidence of this from your past performance
  • That you fit in with them culturally (and to know this you have to know who you are)
  • That you have similar goals and aspirations

And just as importantly you will want to know that they can meet your needs.

Now that's done, let's start searching for creative jobs, marketing jobs, design jobs, event jobs and PR jobs here.
