How to deal with curveball questions

Bite-sized video advice guide with Clodagh Walsh, recruiter for digital jobs across social media and search roles

One of the plus points of being an interviewer is that you get to ask whatever you want! So quite often you’ll get one throwing out a curveball question just to see how you think on your feet.

Take a minute
“If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?”, “If you were a brand, which would it be?” A lot of the time these questions get asked to help interviewers differentiate between candidates of comparable quality. So, if you get thrown by one of these, the best thing to do is not panic - there’s nothing wrong with buying yourself a bit of time. Take a deep breath, compliment the interviewer on asking you such a great question and give yourself a minute to think. "

Take Here are some good examples

Q:“If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?”

A:“I’d describe myself as an oak, because I’m quite sturdy…Very handy when working in project management jobs as I’m someone who can take problems in stride and get on with making things happen.”

Q:"If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?"

A:“An otter. Because I’m always working on something…Probably why I excel at production roles. I always like to be busy!”
