What are the salaries like?
“Entry level is around the £18-22k mark, top end salaries are in the region of £50-70k, but it really does depend on what sort of agency you work for.”

Are their opportunities to freelance?
“Yes, however in the early stages of your career it’s not recommended as you should really try to establish yourself as a designer with one agency where you can learn from other designers. But it is a good way so get a bit of money in your pocket.”

Can it be stressful/rewarding?
“When you’re going through a pitch it can be stressful but the pros certainly outweigh the cons, especially when you get to see your work go live, that can be really rewarding.”

Do you need a degree?
“Most companies will ask for a BA Hons or the equivalent in a related subject - graphic design is a good one as its very broad. However, if you want to specialise then you can also do degrees in subjects such as branding, packaging , advertising – whatever your interest.”

What key skills and personality traits do you need?
“Apart from being creative you need to be really organised and determined.”

How can I get more clued up on the sector?
Creative Review, Design Week and D&AD are all good for keeping up to date on what’s happening in the industry.”
