Career advice video: successful salary negotiation skills for job interviews

With Jane Newell Brown, Head of Learning and Development

Starting a new job or thinking of asking for a pay rise? This video will arm you with the information you need to negotiate your way to a great package.

Not got time to watch a video? Then check out the main points below…

Find the middle ground
"You need to identify what your ideal salary is, but also the minimum you’re willing to accept. Be realistic on your limits - there’s no point taking 20k for a senior PA job if it’s not something you’ll be happy with for long. By the same token, don’t try to double your salary or ask for an exorbitant amount if you haven’t got the experience and skill to back it up. If you’re making a jump from a secretarial job to an admin job, you should of course be asking for more money, but again, be realistic."

 Justify
"Be sure to justify your request with ways you can deliver value back into the business. Telling an employer you want a pay rise because you’ve just bought a new car will get you nowhere.
Showing how you’ve streamlined processes in your production job or pointing out which process you’ll be improving in your new project management role will go much smoother.
"

Its not all about the money
"Don’t discount benefits when weighing up a package. Depending on your stage of life, benefits can go a long way to making an offer more attractive. For someone just starting out, the value of extra holidays and the opportunity to perhaps take sabbaticals can be worth more than money"
