Make the most out of your digital and design portfolio

Having a portfolio is essential to anyone wanting to work or already working within the creative industry. Whether you’re an art worker, digital designer or photographer, a portfolio is a must have for securing any position, be it freelance or permanent. So, here are some tips on how to get it right from Mark Begley, Major Players Head of Recruitment for Creative, Design and Digital jobs.

Not got time for a video? Check out the main points below…

Keep it simple
“You don’t want to bombard the reader with pages and pages of images so it’s best to pick 7-12 key pieces and lay them out in a clean and simple and easy to read format.”

Don't rely on print
“Don’t just rely on print; you could also have an online present (teaser) which you could send over in advance of an interview. Also think about bring a PowerPoint or flash presentation along with you to the interview so you can talk through your work.”

Keep it current
“Presenting an out of date portfolio could be a real deal breaker for your interviewer so make sure yours is current and tailored to the agency your visiting, for example if you’re seeing a consumer agency only include work relevant to them.”

Bde commerically aware
“This is more relevant for senior creatives – so make sure that you are aware of the commercial impact of your work on a campaign. Perhaps come with some figures to demonstrate your results.”

Drafts
“Include drafts, this shows the thought process for a project and also gives you ownership of it. You could even include any good alternative ideas that weren’t chosen.”

State the brief
“Accompany each piece with a short synopsis of the brief; it will make things much clearer for the reader allowing them to interpret your work more fully it will also help if they ask you to discuss the work itself so come prepared.”
