Career advice video: help finding a new job after redundancy

With Jane Newell Brown, Head of Learning and Development

A redundancy can be really hard to take and even harder not to take personally. But it could actually be a great new beginning for your career. Our latest video will help you get started on the road to a great, new job.

Don't panic - plan
"First things first, don’t panic! We speak to loads of people who are made redundant who tell us a year later it was the best thing that ever happened to them. Sit down with a big piece of paper and go through your skills and experience, identify what you’re good at and what you can bring to a new organisation. Make searching for a job, your new job."

Change lanes?
"Now is also a great time to consider whether you’re on the career track that’s right for you. Didn’t really love your last advertising job? Not feeling it for creative industry roles anymore? Maybe it’s time to try a whole new path, pursue a childhood dream or go freelancing. Whether you choose to reinvent yourself or stay on the same career path, the first thing is to identify exactly who you should be contacting in your search for a new job and how you want to contact them."

What's your elevator pitch?
"Instead of umming and ahhhing when people ask about you, give them your sales pitch: “I’ve been working in various design jobs for over 5 years. In my last role, I won a couple of awards for my offline work and since being made redundant 6 months ago, I’ve used to time to bring my digital skills up to date and am looking for my next challenge.”

Tailor
"It’s also a good idea to put together a set of CVs, tailoring each one to different types of job roles you’re after. Anyone reading your CV will decide within 20 seconds whether to read on, so the more relevant the better. If you’ve worked in marketing jobs but have transferable skills that can be used in a PR job you’ve seen, make sure you show that."

Get proactive
"Get out and about; set yourself a target of how many meetings you’re going to set up / how many applications / emails you’re going to send out. Keep positive and keep busy - a great new job is out there for you, you’ve just got to find it."
