expert advice on getting into the business services industry

Cake's HR manager, Mandy Finlay tells you everything you need to know about getting started in a HR job and how you can get ahead...

Not got time to watch a video? Then check out the main points below...

What advice would you give to someone trying to get a foot in the door?

"Advice I would give to someone coming into the HR industry is to really decide which area you want to go into and concentrate your study around that; whether that be recruitment, comps and bens, generalism – whatever."

Is it more about skills or experience?
"It’s important to have the qualification, but we also think it’s more about experience – looking at a candidate’s background, their skills and how we can translate that into our agency. And it’s also about having that spark."

What do you look for in a candidate?
"What makes a Cake person is someone who’s passionate, enthusiastic, creative, fair, challenging and fun. But also someone who’s willing to take the extra mile and risks."

What are the big challenges for your sector?
"Making sure CSR is used in the right way for marketing both small and large companies."

What made you want to get into HR?
"Coming from a financial services background I was given the opportunity to set up a HR function from scratch and for me that was a really new, fresh and exciting challenge."

What inspires you?
"Seeing people really grow and develop."

What's the best thing about your job?
"What I love most about Cake is the work ethic, the career progression and it’s somewhere I can truly be myself."
