expert advice on getting into the experiential & events industries

Looking to make your mark in the experiential marketing or events industry? Get some great advice and insight from one of the biggest names in the industry, Trenton Birch, Managing Director of Pierce Smartfusion.

Not got time to watch a video? Then check out the main points below...

Tell us a bit about Pierce Smartfusion
"We are an experiential agency that also works in the digital space, so we have an offering called Digitally Live. We have a philosophy that follows the consumer pattern in living your life on and offline. So everything we do experientially has a digital element that allows us to deepen and amplify the relationship with the consumer."

What excites you about experiential marketing?
"It’s an exciting space. It begins with us sitting in a room like this and writing on a board and a few months later you’re standing in a field of a big venue or standing on the concourse of a train station and you can see this thing coming to life. It’s tremendously satisfying."

What adive would you give to someone trying to get a foot in the door?
"There are challenges to working in this industry - you have to be thick skinned and you have to be prepared to graft. You’ve got to be prepared to start from the bottom up. You’ve got to be prepared to get your hands dirty. You’ve got to understand the fundamentals of building something from the ground up and the only way you can do is to get stuck in. So if you can’t find an experiential or events job, go into an agency as an intern. Do whatever it takes to get the experience."

What are you looking for in a candidate?
"The people I’m looking for, and I guess there’s a certain cliché in this – I need people who are dynamic and self sufficient. I’m not looking for paper pushers. I need people who are hungry and have a spark. We’re a team here – we pull together and we celebrate wins together. This is about individual achievement but also achievement as a business. Everybody should benefit and celebrate that."
